As you've arrived here it's probable that either you want to get into networking and an MCSE certificate appeals to you, or you're someone with a certain amount of knowledge and you're aware that you need an MCSE.

Be sure you see evidence that the training provider you're using is actually training you on the latest Microsoft level. Many trainees are left in a mess when they realise they've been learning from an old version of MCSE which now needs updating. Be aware of training companies who're only trying to make a sale. Realise that buying training to get an MCSE is much like purchasing a vehicle. They're very diverse; some will serve you very well, whilst others will constantly let you down. A conscientious organisation will give you a thorough consultation to check you've got the correct course. If a company has a creditable product, you'll be able to see a sample of what you're getting before buying anything.

An important area that is sometimes not even considered by potential students considering a training program is 'training segmentation'. Basically, this means the breakdown of the materials for drop-shipping to you, which can make a dramatic difference to where you end up. Many think it logical (with training often lasting 2 or 3 years for a full commercial certification,) that a training provider will issue the courseware in stages, as you complete each part. Although: It's not unusual for trainees to realise that the company's typical path to completion doesn't suit. Sometimes, varying the order of study will be far more suitable. And what happens if they don't finish inside of the expected timescales?

In a perfect world, you'd get ALL the training materials right at the beginning - enabling you to have them all to return to any point - as and when you want. Variations can then be made to the order that you complete your exams if another more intuitive route presents itself.

If your advisor doesn't ask you a lot of questions - the likelihood is they're actually nothing more than a salesman. If they push a particular product before looking at your personality and whether you have any commercial experience, then it's definitely the case. It's worth remembering, if in the past you've acquired any accreditation or direct-experience, then you can sometimes expect to pick-up at a different starting-point to someone new to the industry. Starting with a user skills program first will sometimes be the most effective way to commence your IT studies, but depends on your skill level.
