Low level 'languages' like 'C' are employed by systems programmers - the current version has advanced significantly since the first one and is in fact now a lot more accessible. Software engineers focusing on 'applications' use higher level languages, of which you'll find a good deal. Every one has it's own specific list of commands & rules, plus some are suited to particular tasks more than others. Company database software, for example, tends to be written in languages suited to that environment, whereas games are generally written in low-level languages like 'C' - since they must be able to run as quickly as they can. When you're creating a database application, then it does not matter if your display screen 're-draws' in one tenth of a second or one 100th of a second, whereas with games, it matters a whole lot. We need functions that are intended to make things easier for the database end-user, and so a stripped down 'language' for speed is wholly inappropriate. We could see the distinction by thinking about a racing-car & an estate car. The family-estate is a lot more comfy & affordable, but the trade off is handling & speed. When taking lengthy journeys with the children though, the functional elements are much more relevant.

Don't listen to the typical salesman who just tells you what course you should do without performing a 'fact-find' so as to understand your abilities plus your experience level. Always check they have access to a wide-enough product range from which they could give you a program that suits you.. Often, the starting point of study for a person experienced in some areas is often substantially different to someone without. Where this will be your initial effort at studying for an IT examination then you might also want to start with some basic user skills first.

If you're thinking of using a training company that is still using workshop days as part of their program, then take note of these issues experienced by most trainees:

- Masses of visits to the workshop centre - often quite a distance away.

- If, like many of us, you work, then weekday workshops cause problems at work. You're usually facing several days in a row too.

- Lost holiday days - the majority of workers only have 20 days holiday. If half or more of that is used up by educational workshops, that doesn't leave much holiday time left for the student.

- In a situation where running costs are very high, many schools really push the size of the class - certainly not ideal (giving less time per student).

- Many attendees want to work as quickly as possible, others want a more steady pace and not be pushed beyond their comfort-zone. This will often generate tension and difficulty a lot of the time.

- Add up the cost of all the petrol, fares, parking, food and accommodation and you may be surprised (and not pleasantly). Students talk of increased costs of hundreds to thousands of pounds over time. Break it down - and see for yourself.

- All of us want some privacy. We don't want to risk losing any lift up the ladder at our current place of work because we're getting trained in a different area.

- Surely, all of us at some time have avoided posing that question we were dying to ask, just because we wanted to look smarter?

- For those of us who need to on occasion work or live away part of the time, consider the added problems of reaching the requisite classes, as time is now more scarce than ever.

Wouldn't it be better to simply watch and learn with tutors one-on-one via pre-made modules, doing them at your convenience - not somebody else's. Consider... Using a laptop you have the ability to work absolutely anywhere you want (within reason!) And live 24x7 support is only a web-browser click away at times of difficulty. It doesn't matter how often you would like to re-take a quiz or test, filmed teachers can never get frustrated with you! Also, in this situation, note-taking is a thing of the past. It's already there for you to use. Although it's impossible to remove any normal learning difficulties, it definitely reduces stress and eases things. And you've reduced hassle, travel and costs.

Most people don't even think to ask about something that can make a profound difference to their results - the way the company divides up the courseware sections, and into how many bits. A release of your materials stage by stage, according to your exam schedule is how things will normally arrive. Of course, this sounds sensible, but you might like to consider this: Maybe the order of study prescribed by the provider doesn't suit you. And what if you don't finish each and every section at the speed required?

In an ideal situation, you want ALL the study materials up-front - so you'll have them all to come back to at any time in the future - as and when you want. This allows a variation in the order that you attack each section where a more intuitive path can be found.
